1. Read the following text and answer the question that
follows.
Flood is a natural
calamity. Bangladesh is a low-land. It has many rivers. It rains heavily in the
monsoon period. So, floods are very common in our country.
Damage of floods:
Almost every year flood visits
our country. It causes a heavy damage to our life and properties. Houses are
destroyed, cattle are washed away, corps are greatly damaged and trees are
uprooted. Thousands of people become homeless. They remain without food for
many days on house tops or on the branches of trees.
Condition of communication:
All communications from the
outside world is cut off. Then people move by boats. The after effects of
floods are more serious.
Diseases :
Famine breaks out in the flood affected
areas and many people die for want of foods. The prices of all necessary things
grow up. Many dangerous diseases like cholera, typhoid and dysentery etc
breakout in an epidemic form. Scarcity of pure drinking water causes
great suffering. It ruins the economy of a country. During and after the
flood the relief should go on. Otherwise miseries of the affected people
will increase.
Merits of floods:
Floods do a little good to man,
too. During floods our rivers carry a great deal of silt which makes the land
fertile.

farmer. He was old and weak, but clever. He had two sons. They were young and
strong, but lazy.
One day the old farmer called his
sons to his bed. " Now, my sons ", he said, " I’m very old and
sick and soon I will die. But I’m rich so you can also be rich." The two
sons were surprised. " Where are all your riches?" They asked. "
You’ll find all my riches in our fields", the old man replied, and a few
days later he died.
The two sons were very sad, but
they were also greedy. " We can be rich", they said. " We have
