Today is Pahela Baishakh, the first day of  Bangla Year 1406. The day will be celebrated with traditional festivities (
উত্সব) across the country. The day is a public holiday. In Keeping with the age-old tradition, traders and shopkeepers will open halkhata (fresh account books) and offer sweets to their customers and clients. Different Socio-cultural organizations (সংগঠন) have drawn up elaborate (বিস্তারিত) programmes to celebrate the day. The day’s first programme will begin at dawn (ভোর) at Ramna batamul. Chayanat, a leading cultural organization, will organize the programme. A large number of people wearing traditional dresses are expected to attend the programme. Bangladesh Television will telecast (প্রচার করা) live the programme from 6 a.m. in the morning. National dailies will bring out special Supplements (ক্রোড়পত্র) while Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television will air (প্রচার করা) Special programmes on the occasion.
Students and teachers of the Institute of Fine Arts (IFA) of Dhaka University will bring out a colourful procession (
মিছিল) from the institute premises (চত্বর) at 9.30 a.m. carrying festoons, placards, posters, banners and wearing masks (মুখোশ) to welcome the Bangla New Year. Bangla Academy will hold a cultural programme on its premises in the morning, to be participated by leading artists of the country. Shilpakala Academy will organize a cultural function of the Academy premises.
Jatiya Press Club will hold a cultural function on the club premises at 6 p.m. Bulbul Lalitakala Academy, Liberation war Museum and Bangladesh National Museum will also organize cultural functions on the occasion.

A few days ago I came to Bangladesh on an official visit. 14 April was a public holiday and I had no official engagement. On the day I had the opportunity to attend the programmes of ‘Pahela Baishakh’. Pahela Baishakh means the first day of Bangla year. In the very morning I went to Ramna Batamul and enjoyed the cultural programmes organized by Chhayanat. A large number of people were present there. I also saw the colourful procession brought out by the Institute of Fine Arts. I went to some other places also and everywhere I saw numerous cultural programmes. These programmes are very important for the Bangladeshis as they are traditionally celebrated by all the communities of the country.
